Over 13 years ago I remember painting a bedroom with my father Donald Kirk, a song came on the was American Soldier by Toby Keith. My father and I stopped what we were doing and just sat there and listened. As Toby sang the lyrics I saw my fathers eyes drift back to a different time, back to his military service. For myself, in those lyrics I found inspiration, and a desire to serve others, and this country. It was a moment my father and I share that I will cherish forever.
Although my father has been gone for almost a year, last night I was able to tell Toby about that moment, and pass him on my fathers Make a Wave coin, which raises awareness for Mantel cell lymphoma. Over about ten beers, I had the opportunity to tell him all about my brother Ryan Kirk, and how he left us the greatest gift you can in death, inspiration. Inspiration to be better, to be kinder, to leave this place better than we found it. I'm honored to welcome our newest Wave Maker and friend, Toby Keith. Read More...
